Sodwana bay, one of the top dive sites in the WORLD!!

Sodwana Bay national park is a narrow strip of forested sand dunes located along the east coast of South Africa and is classified as one of the top dive sites in the world. This 50 km reef complex boasts around 95 species of hard and soft coral, sponges, other invertebrates and around 1200 fish species.

The vast diversity of marine life include whales, whalesharks, hammerheads, great white sharks, oceanic black- & whitetip sharks, abundance of rays, endangered leatherback turtles, dolphins and even great macro!!

But besides all of this….the discovery of the Coelacanths made this region world-famous!!

What’s the Diving like in Sodwana Bay?

Sodwana Bay is rated by international divers as one of the top 10 dive destinations in the world. These reefs are of the most southerly coral reefs in the world and are fed by warm water carried southward by the Agulhas Current. Not only beautiful well fed corals but an INSANE fish diversity, with over 1100 species having been positively identified.

DIVING SEASON

December to February – (Water temp: 27°C) Sightings: whale sharks, manta rays, bottle nose dolphins and the ragged-tooth sharks.

June to October – (Water temp: 24°C) Sightings: humpback whales, southern right whales, minke whales and nesting sea turtles.

Whale Shark

The whale shark (Rhincodon typus) is a slow-moving, filter-feeding carpet shark and the largest known extant fish species. The largest confirmed individual had a length of 12.65 m (41.5 ft) and a weight of about 21.5 t (47,000 lb). The whale shark holds many records for size in the animal kingdom, most notably being by far the largest living nonmammalian vertebrate.

What is our accommodation like?

We will be staying in a beautiful 3 star guesthouse. All rooms are air-conditioned with spacious en-suite bathrooms and clean towels and bedding. Cleaning services daily with very helpful, friendly staff. Our accommodation is secluded and situated in beautiful gardens and is 200 meters off the main road and less than 3 kilometers from the Parks Board gate. There is a swimming pool and braai facilities for all of us to have a braai in the evenings. There is also secure parking with a night watchman and place to wash & dry your dive equipment. Really the perfect place for divers and NON-divers.

If you are looking for something different, whether it is camping, secluded luxurious upmarket accommodation or even tents! Sodwana has enough options to give you exactly what you are looking for.

Things to remember before we go….

We will be leaving the Thursday at around 9:00, for those of you who are travelling with us please be at Reef Divers at 08.30 so we can pack the last luggage.
